Spotlight:
Happy birthday to Peggy Fleming, who turns 60 today. In 1968, Fleming became the first American to take home Olympic gold in figure skating, and she was the only American to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics that year. It was the first time that the Olympic games were broadcast live and in color on television. Fleming's grace and energy on the ice were a big hit with her fans; she was particularly photogenic, as were her routines and moves. Exactly thirty years later, Fleming rose to another challenge: she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a lumpectomy and radiation treatments. She credits her athletic training with helping her to keep up her spirits while facing and tackling the disease.
